Artist and Copper Shop Sales Associate, Meg Murphy, put her talents to work interpreting the Dard Hunter Rose. The Rose has been incorporated into an attractive paperweight and sold exclusively at the Copper Shop Gallery located on the Roycroft Campus, a National Historic Landmark. This is the first in a collection of paperweights to be designed. Hunter joined Elbert Hubbard’s artisan community, known at the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, New York, in 1904. A leading proponent of the Arts & Crafts Movement, Hubbard encouraged Hunter to develop his artistic talents in graphic design, stained glass, and metalwork. Hunter designed stained glass windows for the Roycroft Inn and title pages for the Roycroft Press, including the cover of Hubbard’s monthly magazine, “The Fra”. Dard Hunter continued to create original prints, hand-made paper and unique type until his passing in 1966. Ms. Murphy is a graduate of SUNY Brockport majoring in Studio Art with a minor in Art History. In designing the paperweight, Meg incorporated the Roycroft Campus Corporation (RCC) logo and the year. And if you look closely, you can see her initials artistically woven into the design. The paperweight is available for purchase, in time for the Roycroft Summer Festival, at the Copper Shop Gallery, open daily from 10am to 5pm, in limited supply. Over 60 Artisans are represented in the Gallery with hand-crafted work on display and for sale.
