Compass Rose Illumination
(with Artist, Necole Witcher)
Friday, April 5 from 6:00pm - 9:00pm
The Compass Rose not only showed principal directions on maps but also took part in the invention of the magnetic compass used to navigate the ocean. The variations in design fluctuated through time and place, merging utility and artistry.
In this class, students will create a compass rose based on historical and personal ideas. Using both basic and intermediate examples provided, participants will design their compass, then use a variety of media, including inks, paints and gold and silver composition leaf, to create a one of a kind artwork. This is the next step-up from Introduction to Gold Leaf and Initial Letter Illumination classes with plenty of support for your artistic ideas. Join us in a relaxed and informative atmosphere and take home your own piece of medieval inspired art.
Tools for designing and painting will be available including gold and silver composition leaf, compass drawing tools, inks, watercolor, gouache and embossing tools. Pencils, brushes and blotting material will also be available. The tools provided during the class project will remain the property of the instructor. Students are highly recommended to bring magnification (reading) glasses if needed.
From curating to modeling to painting, Necole Witcher has been involved in the art business since 2007. She has a background in watercolor, art history and botany. Necole currently works at the Illumination Studio and Press Room in the Roycroft Print Shop and continues to promote and educate people in this age old art form. It makes her day if her work inspires or pushes at the edges of reality.
Class Tuition: $35 + $5 Supplies = $40
